This is a photo of repeated staircases with a solitary person in front of each one. This photo is by Ray K. Metzker. It is entitled “A Maze ‘N Philadelphia”. I think this photo is trying to communicate confusion and repetition, possibly the act of getting nowhere, not advancing. The work communicates this to me. The artist used the technique of cropping multiple similar photos together to create one large one. This technique enhanced the power of the photo to me. The fact that it appears that not one of the people in the photo is able to get anywhere other than up or down the staircase and is making no progress-hence, a maze. My emotional reaction to the photo was anxiety. If I was stuck in a maze as is depicted in this photo, and could not find a way out, it would make me crazy. I thought it was very smart of the artist to come up with a way to create an image of, for me, anxiety.
